~Option Two~

Shrinking Solution

For today’s lesson, we’ll be taking a look at the Shrinking Solution. The Shrinking Solution, as the name suggests, can shrink the target of the potion down in size. In fact, wizards have shrunken down quite a bit using this solution! One wizard, named Samuel Plunkett, used shrinking solution to shrink down an entire village! Some wizards have even used it to shrink down livestock to more easily move them to a new location. It can be a convenient tool, but only if brewed properly! If it is brewed incorrectly, the potion will become poisonous, so be mindful of the instructions before you try to use this potion! It’s a moderately difficult potion, which is why we haven’t discussed it before now, but I have faith that you can manage to brew it without too much trouble!

Now this particular potion has two known brewing methods. One is the most common, and undoubtedly used quite often by Potioneers, while the other is an alternate version preferred by The Half-Blood Prince aka Severus Snape. This alternate version differs in both brewing instructions and ingredients. For example, the alternate version requires you to heat the potion twice, each time waiting for it to turn a different color, before adding in the next ingredient. Another key difference is that in the original, the Potioneer needs to cast the Shrinking Charm to complete the potion, while the alternate version does not have any wand or spell requirements.

Homework

1. Name three different ways the shrinking solution can be used. Explain why you would use it as opposed to a spell or different potion.

2. Choose 1 of the options below:

Option A: Brew the Shrinking Solution using either the original recipe, or the recipe preferred by Severus Snape. State which version you chose and why you chose it. Once it is complete, leave a vial on my desk!

Option B: Imagine you are a wizard who stumbled upon some Shrinking Solution. Write a short story about how you found the potion and what you ended up doing with it. Be creative and have fun!
