~Option Two~

Common Potion Ingredients

For today’s lesson, we will be looking at the more common potion ingredients. That is, ingredients used across multiple known potions. So, for starters, let’s take a look at Billywig Sting. Billywig Sting on its own has the ability to make a person float, as well as cause giddiness, but it is used in super common potions such as the Antidote to Uncommon Poisons, Wideye Potion, and even the Hair-Raising Potion. The preparation of the stings may change what role they play in the potion. For example, Billywig Sting must be dried before being used in the Wideye Potion, while the Antidote for Uncommon Poisons lists no such preference. Billywig Stings can be powdered or dried before being used in any potion, but the potion’s instructions are not always clear on which should be used.

Another well known and common potion ingredient is Flobberworm Mucus. Flobberworm Mucus, unlike Billywig Sting, has no additional preparation required. It is used to thicken potions, most notably Wiggenweld Potion, Herbicide Potion, Sleeping Draught, and Cure for Boils. As you can see, potions ingredients can have a variety of uses. Some are more active, causing the potion to have a certain effect, while others are more inactive, such as the various ingredients used purely to thicken or otherwise change the appearance of the potion. Now on to your assignment!

Note

~ Active ingredients are those that help the potion have its desired effect. For example, Lavender is known for its calming abilities, so it'd be an active ingredient in calming potions.

~ Passive/Inactive ingredients are the ingredients that are needed to make the potion, but do not affect the potions effect. For example, an ingredient used to thicken a potion would be considered a passive ingredient in any potion that uses it.

Homework

1. Choose 3 other common potion ingredients. What potions are they used in?

2. What are the ingredients you listed used for? Are they potion thickeners? Do they have a more active role? If the answer is unclear, what do you think they do and why?

3. Choose a potion that uses at least one of the common ingredients you chose in part one of the homework and brew it. Write out, in your own words, every step you took as you brewed the potion.
