~Option One~

Less Common Potion Ingredients

Welcome to another year of Potions!

In today’s lesson, we will be taking a look at some less common potions ingredients, namely those we only know one potion that uses them. For example, let’s take a look at Doxy Eggs. Doxy Eggs are used in the Girding Potion. Doxy Eggs are naturally poisonous, so a good Potioneer is careful not to accidentally eat one or misplace it! They are small, black eggs, that could easily be mistaken for something harmless when they will actually make you quite ill! However, when properly mixed into a potion, it is quite harmless. In the case of the Girding Potion, it’ll even help boost your endurance!

Another example would be Squill Bulbs. Squill Bulbs are used in Felix Felicis by wizards and are used as a remedy for coughs by muggles! Isn’t that fascinating?! The bulbs are most useful when picked just after the plant has flowered, though it is useful for anyone seeking some extra luck! The instructions for Felix Felicis do not specify which species of Squill Bulb should be used, but there are quite a variety to be found. The ingredient itself is common, even if we only know of one potion that makes use of it! Given its healing capabilities, as shown by the muggles use of it, I wouldn’t be surprised to find that lesser known healing potions use this incredible plant as an ingredient as well!

Note

~ Active ingredients are those that help the potion have its desired effect. For example, Lavender is known for its calming abilities, so it'd be an active ingredient in calming potions.

~ Passive/Inactive ingredients are the ingredients that are needed to make the potion, but do not affect the potions effect. For example, an ingredient used to thicken a potion would be considered a passive ingredient in any potion that uses it.

Homework

1. Choose 2-3 other lesser known ingredients (ingredients that are only known to be used in one potion) and do some research on them. What potion are they used in?

2. Are the ingredients you chose more passive or more active? Or are the effects of the ingredient unknown?

3. What other potions do you think you could use these ingredients in? and Why?
