~Option One~

Potions Etiquette

Welcome, welcome! For today’s lesson we are going to start at the very beginning! In this case, Potions Etiquette! Proper Potioneers pay attention to the equipment they use and keep their workspace neat and tidy. This helps to ensure the potions brewed will be brewed correctly and safely. After all, a dirty cauldron can be extremely dangerous!

Best case scenario: the potion simply fails to brew and becomes goop.

Worst case scenario: there could be a magical explosion causing great damage to anyone within range!

To avoid this, always be sure to clean all of your equipment after each task or each potion brewed. Safety must take a priority!

Speaking of safety, you’ll want to make sure your hair and clothing are safely out of the way when brewing, unless you’re aiming to become part of the potion yourself! Keep long hair tied up, sleeves rolled up, and make sure you are not wearing any dangly bits of jewelry or any other accessory that could fall off into the potion.

Now, we’ll discuss the different equipment that you can and will use. In your first year you have a size 2 pewter cauldron, glass or crystal phials, brass scales, and brewproof goggles. The goggles are there to help you brew safely, while the other equipment is used in the brewing itself. The phials will hold set amounts of potion that you can turn in at the end of the practicals, as well as hold set amounts of potions you end up brewing after you complete your schooling. The scales are used to measure out ingredients, as precision is key in potions, while the cauldron is the center of the brewing process. Each cauldron has its own properties. Some are easier to work with, while others are more difficult and suited to be used by more seasoned Potioneers. Now on to the homework!

Homework

1. What safety measures should you take before brewing any potions? Why are these important?

2. What types of cauldrons are available? Why do you think all first years start with the size 2 pewter cauldron?

3.  Choose 1 of the following:

Option A: What do you hope to learn from this class?

Option B: Take a look at the following video. How would you change/modify the song to include potion specific safety rules (IE keeping your cauldron clean)?
